Discover Edinburgh, perfect for a weekend getaway blending together loads of history, art and culture. Wander through its Harry Potter-esque streets, explore ancient castles, and uncover the wild stories that are on every street. Best visited in the spring, summer and early fall, Edinburgh is safe and welcoming, offering an unforgettable experience for college travelers.
Black Ivy is undoubtedly my favorite boutique hotel in Edinburgh, offering good value with its reasonably priced rooms (ranging from $125 in the low season to $195 in the high season for a double bed room). Nestled in the quaint Bruntsfield neighborhood, it's a mere 5-minute walk from the city center, surrounded by an array of charming trinket shops and boutiques. Despite its affordable rates, Black Ivy exceeds expectations with its well decorated rooms and inviting ambiance. However, it's worth noting a couple of minor drawbacks: the absence of a dedicated reception area and the lack of in-room phones, which can make it challenging to locate staff members when needed. Additionally, while the food is decent, venturing out to nearby restaurants is highly recommended for a more memorable dining experience. Overall, Black Ivy is a safe, budget-friendly haven that provides an excellent base for exploring Edinburgh.
My favorite thing to recommend
Dishoom: A must-visit in Edinburgh's culinary scene, Dishoom offers a multi-story Indian dining experience like no other. From the exquisite ambiance to the mouthwatering chicken curry, every aspect is impeccable. Be sure to book ahead to avoid a wait—we learned the hard way with a 45-minute delay. However, the basement bar's vibrant atmosphere makes the wait enjoyable. Overall, the experience and food of Dishoom made any wait well worth it.
The Magnum: If you are looking for some fresh Scottish produce, The Magnum has you covered. Offering classic Scottish cuisine and an inviting warm atmosphere, it's the perfect spot to immerse yourself in the city's culinary delights. Don't miss out on their delectable scallops—an absolute must-try for seafood enthusiasts.
Baba: Nestled in the heart of the New Town on George Street, Baba is hailed as one of Scotland's culinary treasures. Securing a reservation beforehand is basically required, as the demand for a table can be high—often they won't even accommodate walk-ins. However, the exceptional service more than compensates for any wait. When seated, indulge in menu highlights like the obvious Baba Ganoush (which the restaurant is named after) as well as the harissa and burnt butter hummus, slow-cooked lamb, and charred hispi cabbage, promising a feast for the senses.
Kenji Sushi: When sushi cravings strike in Edinburgh, look no further than Kenji Sushi. Tucked away in Stockbridge, this cozy Japanese eatery boasts a welcoming atmosphere and a yummy menu featuring sushi rolls, bento boxes, and traditional Japanese dishes. While reservations are advisable, I was pleasantly surprised to walk in and be seated promptly. With shareable dishes and attentive service, Kenji Sushi is definitely my most recommended spot for student travelers.
Edinburgh Castle: Going up to the Edinburgh Castle is a must-do if you are in the city. Even if you skip the castle tour (which is honestly a tad underwhelming) you can't miss the picturesque Princes Street Gardens right in front of it, offering a tranquil oasis in the heart of the city or the views from both sides of the entrance of the castle. If you do decide to go through the rooms of the castle, my favorite was the armory which is pictured.
Victoria Street: Visit the highly recognizable street which is perfect for Instagramming Edinburgh with its colorful and vibrant storefronts.
Greyfriars Kirkyard: Harry Potter fans won't want to miss Greyfriars Kirkyard, this historic graveyard is where J.K. Rowling found inspiration for character names and exploring feels like you have entered into a secret garden of Hogwarts already.
W. Armstrong & Son Vintage: This vintage store offers a wide variety of all types of clothing and all types of price points. Last time I was in here I walked out with four trench coats that ultimately totaled up to sixty pounds. If you check this place out, you are sure to come out with a purchase as this really is any vintage enthusiast's dream.
Arthur’s Seat Hike: If you are looking for some exercise and an amazing view of the city the Arthur’s Seat Hike is an ideal activity. This 2.6-mile (4.2-kilometer) loop promises approximately 2 hours of exploration, though be prepared to encounter fellow hikers as the trail is a popular choice. Starting at the end of the Royal Mile, which winds through the historic Old Town, this hike offers the perfect opportunity to stroll through Edinburgh’s famous street, if you are up for more walking.
National Galleries of Scotland: Where the picture to the right was taken. If you are an Art History major (or have taken any of those classes) you will really appreciate the collection that this museum has to offer. As two first-years taking a module in Art History, seeing the Rembrant and Ruben paintings that we had studied just days before was pretty neat and the galleries are no joke. Definitely worth a visit if you appreciate art.
Fight Club Darts: This is the definition of don’t knock it til you try it. Even if darts never seemed like your cup of tea, this unique venue will change your mind. For just $10 per person, indulge in an hour of dart-throwing fun, guaranteed to leave you entertained. With live cameras capturing everyone's reactions and screens displaying your group's games and player rotations, the atmosphere is lively and engaging. It's an activity that's well worth the investment for a memorable and amusing outing.
Stockbridge Market: Sundays in Edinburgh come alive with the Stockbridge Market, where a plethora of vendors showcase their arts, crafts, and most importantly, yummy food offerings. With an important emphasis on food the market brings in many culinary delights from around the region. However, since the market takes place outdoors, it's wise to check the weather forecast and aim for a rain-free window to fully enjoy the experience without the inconvenience of rain and wind. So, come hungry and explore the diverse array of treats waiting to be discovered at Stockbridge Market
Why Not Nightclub: This student club promises a wild and energetic atmosphere, perfect for mingling with fellow college students. Expect pop and some house music and a very electric scene that does not stop until closing at 3:00am. However, it's worth noting that the crowd tends to skew towards a younger demographic. So, if you're up for an energetic night and eager to connect with other students, Why Not is the place to be.
Subway Cowgate Nightclub: Dive into the energy of this unique venue, where the graffitied walls are inspired by the gritty charm of NYC subways. Despite not being exclusively for students, Subway Cowgate remains a magnet for college students, thanks to its very cheap drinks and being open every day of the week until 3:00am. Whether you're seeking a spontaneous night out or craving a dose of urban-inspired ambiance, Subway Cowgate promises an unforgettable experience in the heart of Edinburgh's nightlife scene.
Monkey Barrel Comedy Club: For a laid-back yet laughable evening, look no further than Monkey Barrel Comedy Club. With tickets priced as low as £3, it's an affordable option for a fun night with friends. Prepare to leave with your spirits lifted, as the talented comedians ensure you're in for a memorable experience. So if you are wanting to hang out with your friends and unwind with some laughter go to the Monkey Barrel.
Wetherspoons: A go-to spot for budget-conscious college students, Wetherspoons offers cheap drinks and food options. With reliable chains scattered across the UK, including Edinburgh, it's a solid place to enjoy pub vibes for much lower prices. Whether you're looking for a quick bite or a casual hangout with friends, Wetherspoons delivers affordable eats and a laid-back atmosphere tailored to student budgets.
